Step 1

Hoosier Recycle's program is an ALL PAPER program that utilizes source separation. This means material is separated into two streams starting at the deskside. Each participant is provided with a deskside recycling container. Participants place all recyclable paper into the deskside container and all trash in their regular wastebasket.

Step 2

Employee's then empty their deskside collectors into a centralized Recycling receptacle. Hoosier Shred & Recycle has various large collection receptacles available, and will work with your team to determine the most appropriate for your location.

Step 3

A Hoosier Shred & Recycle team member then picks up your materials and transports them back to the recycling facility, where the material is weighed, baled and sent to the paper mill.

Step 4

Once at the mill, the paper originally collected from your facility is turned into raw material for new paper products. The first step is hydro-pulping. The paper is put into a pulping machine, similar to an industrial-sized household blender. Water is added, and centrifugal force is used. The blending action of the machine breaks down the individual fibers into a paper slurry, commonly known as pulp.

Step 5

Contaminants such as paper clips, staples, and rubberbands are removed by running the slurry (paper pulp) through a series of filters and washings. A process known as the cleaning of the fibers.

Step 6

The watery pulp is then sprayed onto a large plastic screen where water drains from the pulp and the paper fibers bond together, forming a watery sheet. The wet sheets are then pressed between heated, felt-covered rollers to remove excess water and make the paper smooth and strong.

Final Result

The end result of Recycling your office paper is conservation of the Earth's natural resources.

Did you know...

  • For every ton of paper that is recycled, the following is saved: 7,000 gallons of water; 380 gallons of oil; and enough electricity to power an average house for six months.
  • You can run a TV for six hours on the amount of electricity that is saved by recycling one aluminum can.
  • By recycling just one glass bottle, you save enough electricity to power a 100-watt bulb for four hours.
  • To produce each week's Sunday newspapers, 500,000 trees must be cut down.
  • Recycling a single run of the Sunday New York Times would save 75,000 trees.
  • If all our newspaper was recycled, we could save about 250,000,000 trees each year!
  • Each ton (2000 pounds) of recycled paper can save 17 trees, 380 gallons of oil, three cubic yards of landfill space, 4000 kilowatts of energy, and 7000 gallons of water. This represents a 64% energy savings, a 58% water savings, and 60 pounds less of air pollution!

Hoosier Recycle

When you consider the tremendous benefit of paper, and the environmental cost of throwing it away, it's clear that we must all continue to work together by recycling used paper. Recycling is easy to do, and it's good for business and the environment. So next time you read the paper, open your mail, clean out your files, or empty a box, don't put that paper and paperboard packaging in the trash. Complete the circle and recycle it!
